About TurboTax
TurboTax is a tax preparation software used by Americans in preparing their federal and state tax returns. Developed by Michael A. Chipman in the mid-1980s, it has undergone several revisions in accordance with the changes implemented by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
There are several versions of the TurboTax software including TurboTax Deluxe and TurboTax Premier. Each version usually shares several features with the other versions but the more high-end ones have extra features, such as audit defense. Every version is also easy-to-use even for beginners, thanks to its step-by-step guidance on tax preparation. Most people who use it choose the self-prepared tax returns route instead of hiring a tax preparer for the job.
The federal version is usually released during the latter part of the year while the state software is released between mid-January and mid-February. The new versions can only be released when the IRS completes its revisions to the relevant forms and subsequently approves the newest TurboTax version.
