About LA Fitness
LA Fitness is at the forefront of the resurgence of interest in fitness and it’s something that the chain of gyms deserves! Not only are the LA Fitness prices for membership, among others, reasonable but, more importantly, the facilities, amenities and services are world-class in quality. No wonder that the chain continues its streak as among the most popular gyms in North America.
Chin Yi and Lisa Marie Novins opened Rainbow Nautilus, a fitness gym, in Los Angeles, California in 1983. But by 1984, the partners changed its name to LA Fitness, which it has retained to this day.
The chain expanded its geographical scope primarily by acquiring under-performing gyms and clubs across the United States. Many of its new locations were also newly constructed ones. The acquired brands include Lifestyle Family Fitness Clubs, Bally Total Fitness, and Vision Quest Sport and Fitness, to name a few; these were usually remodeled and/or renamed according to the LA Fitness model.
In 2007, LA Fitness became an international chain when it opened its first gym in Canada.
Privileges of Membership
LA Fitness offers two types of membership plans. While each type has its merits, be sure to read the terms and conditions including the members’ rights and responsibilities before signing on the dotted line. You have to be a savvy client who knows exactly what you can expect from the gym and what is expected in turn as its client!
In most cases, the membership fees already include full access to the gym. But extra amenities and services may or may not be covered by your chosen plan so, again, be sure to check the fine print. When in doubt, don’t assume – instead, ask the staff members or the managers for clarification, especially when you don’t want surprise items on your next fee payment.
The two membership plans offered by LA Fitness are as follows:
- Single Club, a membership plan that allows full access to the LA Fitness gym where you signed up for
- Multi-Club, a membership plan that allows full access to several LA Fitness gyms aside from the one where you signed up for
Which one is the better option? Well, it depends on your personal preferences based on your fitness program and lifestyle.
You may, for example, choose the Single Club membership when you prefer a neighborhood LA Fitness gym because of its proximity to your home or office. You may, on the other hand, select the Multi-Club membership because you want more variety in your fitness environment or you have a more mobile lifestyle (i.e., frequent traveler).
Regardless of your chosen membership plan, keep in mind that both have monthly fees and an initiation fee. You have to pay the initiation fee, a one-time fee, and the monthly fee to keep your membership current. You will also be required to pay the fees for the first and last months, which means that the LA Fitness fees can be more expensive than your usual gym fees.
But don’t let these prices deter you from becoming an LA Fitness regular member! You will find that these fees are a small price to pay for the opportunity to achieve your fitness goals.
As a current LA Fitness member, you have the following enviable benefits:
- Full access to the cardio, weight and flexibility training equipment in the gym
- Free access to many of the fitness classes offered by the gyms; many of the classes can be availed of for an extra fee but we have to say that these are well worth the expense
- Free access to the racquetball courts (terms and conditions apply)
Aside from these two basic types of membership plans, LA Fitness also offers an upgraded plan that allows access to its Signature Clubs. In these gyms, the facilities, amenities and services are more upscale in keeping with the higher fees. If you want a less-than-typical gym experience, then you should consider it; ask the staff for more information.
Members are provided with a fob key or an access card that should be used in entering LA Fitness gyms. Without it, you will have a challenging time entering the gym unless a staff member verifies that, indeed, you are who you say you are.
There’s an alternative – you can download the LA Fitness app to your smartphone so you have an access card, in a manner of speaking. The app also has other features, such as a fitness tracker, which should ideally be used to your advantage.
LA Fitness makes it easy as well for budget-conscious individuals to avail of its membership plans without paying an arm and a leg. AAA members, for example, can avail of a discount – they don’t have to pay the initiation fee and they can avail of a Multi-Club plan at a lower rate, among other privileges.
Best of all, the LA Fitness facilities and amenities are topnotch! Choose from a wide range of free weights and weight machines; cardio equipment like stationary bikes, stair climbers, and treadmills; and courts for basketball, racquetball, and basketball; as well as whirlpools, saunas, and heated lap pools.
