Caneva da Nani - Prosecco
Producer: Caneva da Nani
Name: Valdobbiadene
Origin: Veneto
Varietal: Glera
Type: Sparkling
Description: Citrus Peel, Crisp, Dry
About: The 'vin col fondo' is a naturally re-fermented white sparkling wine made with 100% Glera fruit and its must. After a maturation in vats, it is then bottled, and thanks to specific temperature control (15-18°C), the yeast ferments the residual sugars, saturating the wine into bubbles. After about 60 days, the yeast settles at the bottom of the bottle leaving that unmistakable and unique natural preservative that leads to the wine’s characteristic aroma, texture, and flavor.

Ampeleia, Unlitro 2020
Producer: Ampeleia
Name: Unlitro
Origin: Chile
Varietal: Pinot Noir
Type: Red Wine
Description: Earthy, minerals, mushrooms, vanilla, oak, red cherry
About: Packaged in its distinctive one-liter bottle, the Ampeleia 2019 Unlitro represents a blend of various organic and biodynamic grapes grown on the property. The blend is 40% Alicante Nero (Grenache), 15% Carignano, 25% Mourvèdre, 15% Sangiovese and 5% Alicante Bouschet. Fruit comes from the lowest-altitude vineyard of the estate called Cannucceto. The squat one-liter bottle pays homage to a yesteryear of wine when these larger containers were commonly used. This fresh and punchy wine opens to a lean appearance and a pleasantly fragrant bouquet with wild flower, blood orange, lilac and iron ore. The finish is thin and not long, but there is nice elegance here. Production is an ample 150,000 bottles. - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Cuvée des Deux Monts Bourgueil 2017
Producer: Domaine Guion
Name: Cuvée des Deux Monts Bourgueil 2017
Origin: France
Varietal: Cabernet Franc
Type: Red wine
Description: Strawberry, cherry, red fruit, spices, pepper, black fruit
About: From 70-year-old vines in "Petits Monts" and "Grand Monts" towards the top of the slope above Benais, facing roughly south-west, clay over Turonien limestone (tuffeau, craie micacée). This is the terroir giving the most elegant and age-worthy Bourgueils. 18-month élevage ; 40% in cuve inox, 20% in one new 400 liter barrel, 20% in one-year and 20% in two-year old barrels, assembled two months before bottling. Our first taste of the 2017 "Deux Monts" revealed it to be a superb wine, quite deep and ripe but still light on its feet and with a particularly long and focused finish. Says Stéphane "the weather in 2017 was quite warm in spring and summer with a bit of rain in september - the wine is quite floral with ripe red fruits and mineral flavors on the palate with round, supple tannins and the limestone terroir quite present in the finish." It's a beautiful wine showing the old vines and great terroir...

Mary Taylor Jean Marc Barthez Bordeaux Rouge 2018
Producer: Mary Taylor
Name: Mary Taylor Jean Marc Barthez Bordeaux Rouge 2018
Origin: France
Varietal: Merlot, Cabernet Franc
Type: Red Wine
Description: Blackberry, plum, cherry, red fruit, earthy, minerals
About: Bordeaux isn't all chateaus, Porsches, and mega-wineries. There is an “alternative” Bordeaux that is populated by the small independent estates that line the banks of the Garonne and the Dordogne Rivers, where conscientious growers craft honest bottles for everyday enjoyment rather than 100-point scores. This is the Bordeaux to which winemaker Jean Marc Barthez belongs. The archetypal “dirt-under-the-fingernails” winemaker, he serves as the president of a small co-operative winery in Monségur, an ancient village founded by Eleanor of Aquitaine in the 13th century. There, he oversees a handful of growers who cultivate small family vineyards and join forces to produce Bordeaux wines that their friends and neighbors can actually afford.

Mary Taylor, Sicilia Rosso 2019
Producer: Mary Taylor
Name: Sicilia Rosso 2019
Origin: Italy
Varietal: Nero d’Avola
Type: Red Wine
Description: Red fruit, cherry, oak, allspice, black fruit, red licorice
About: Again from the Contrada San Nicola vineyard outside the village of Mazara del Vallo in western Sicily, we find Nero d’Avola vines tended to by the ever thoughtful Sala sisters. The vines are just 15 years old on average but the wine is ever complex. While some Nero d’Avola wines can be on the dense and fruity side, the Sala sisters and the terroir make this wine a somewhat translucent red with bright acidity, tension, and elegant fruit. As someone who loves Burgundy, this is the style of wine that makes my mouth water.

Páramos de Nicasia 2017
Producer: Máquina & Tabla
Name: Páramos de Nicasia 2017
Origin: Spain
Varietal: 60% Tinta de Toro, 35% Garnacha, 5% Malvasia
Type: Red wine, Spanish Toro Red
Description: Earthy, minerals, red fruit. strawberry, oak, tobacco, vanilla, blackberry, plum
About: This Páramos de Nicasia is Oriol & Susana's "village wine" in Toro.
It comes from an old ungrafted vine in Villaester, North West of the Douro, on sandy soils. Besides the typical Tinta de Toro, one can find there quite a lot of Grenache and Malvasia.
If you add to all of this Oriol's very traditional approach to winemaking, you get a really singular Toro. Oriol does not use chemical, nor sulphur, nor laboratory yeast? He does not de-stem the bunches either, those are fermented whole for 10 weeks then aged for 16 months in big used vats. Light red colour. A hint of fizz comes first then disappears, replaced by an explosion of red fruit on the nose. The wine is fresh, but wide and pure on the palate; the fruit returns in the finish, both crisp and juicy.

About: Any wine named "Little Tanned Pig" after tourists on the Riviera is worth a try and this one happens to be quite good. Made by Jean-Marie Rimbert in Saint-Chinian (Languedoc) it's largely Cinsault with a little Syrah, and offers red berry notes on the nose and juicy, cranberry and cherry notes on the palate. Brand - Riesling
Producer: Brand
Name: Riesling
Origin: Pfalz
Varietal: Riesling
Type: White
Description: Bone-Dry, Green Apples, Elderflower
About: A liter bone-dry and crystalline Riesling from a couple of brother's farming biodynamically in the Pfalz. Bright notes of green apples, limes and touch of elderflower if you're looking for it. A perfect white for beating the heat, doesn't require food but plays will with many a cheese and white meats.
The Brand brothers are...electrifying their little town and this forgotten region. And they are doing so with huge smiles, a raucous joy – even downright excitement – in their role as stewards for the land.
It’s a rather curious blend of youthful exuberance, a surplus of energy and an unflappable belief in the future of viticulture in their vineyards, tempered by a maturity that is surprising given their ages (Daniel was born in 1990; Jonas in 1994).

About: It was produced with Verdejo and Malvasía grapes from the Toro zone, but all the wines here sold without appellation. As I found in most of the wines I tasted this time, the process seemed to have marked the wine more than anything, and it has some lactic and oxidative notes with something earthy/organic, faint volatility, ripe fruit and moderate acidity.

Gruner Leader 2020
Producer: Barbara Ohlzelt
Name: Gruner Leader 2020
Origin: Austria
Varietal: Gruner Veltliner
Type: White wine
Description: Pear, apple, green apple, tree fruit, citrus, lemon, lime, citrus
About: Barbara Öhlzelt is turning the region’s paradigm completely on its head. Instead of the unctuous, powerful and masculine wines of the famous large estates, Barbara’s wines emphasize focus and a quiet, simmering intensity. They are fine, clearly delineated, precisely-etched renditions of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling with just as much depth and persistence as the big boys, but on a lighter, more refreshing frame. They really are like the wines of Weiser-Künstler, but translated into the dialect of the Kamptal – loess, granite and sandstone, rather than slate. It should go without saying, but of course the wines are loaded with mouth-watering acidity and the alcohol levels are carefully restrained. Barbara is soft-spoken but intense; the wines are not unlike their shepherd. These are racy, delicate wines of purity and energy, and are exactly what the next chapter in the story of Austrian wine should be.
